Abilio Goncalves

Abilio Goncalves 88 of New Bedford passed away Sunday October 12, 2014 at St. Luke’s hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Julia (daCruz) Goncalves and son of the late Joao Goncalves Pasqual and Ana Fernandes. He was born in Trogada, Portugal and had lived in New Bedford since 1958. Mr. Goncalves was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was formerly employed by Savin Brothers in Ct. working highway construction. Survivors include his wife, his sons John Goncalves and his wife Maria of New Bedford, Manuel Goncalves and his wife Michele of Acushnet; his daughter Maria Benevides and her husband Paul of New Bedford; his brother Antonio Fernandes of New Bedford; his sisters Rosa Fernandes of Lisbon, Laurinda Pereira of New Bedford, Lucillia Fernandes of New Bedford, Ana Fernandes of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren Nicholas, Thomas, Christina, Jennifer, John, Joshua, Katie and Christopher; 5 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Armindo Fernandes and Maria Goncalves. His funeral mass will be said 9am Wednesday at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Visiting hours are Tuesday 5-8pm.Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
