Alberto Fernandes

New Bedford Alberto J. Fernandes 78 of New Bedford passed away at home surrounded by his family on Friday August 6, 2010. He was the husband of Dolores (Freitas) Fernandes for 48 years. He was the son of the late Joaquim and Felismina (de Gouveia) Fernandes. He was born in Funchal, Madeira Island and had lived in New Bedford since 1966. He was formerly employed by Aerovox as a machinist until his retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception church. Mr. Fernandes was a member of the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento and had served as a festeiro. He enjoyed watching his favorite soccer team Porto, gardening, making wine and moonshine. While living in Madeira, as a young man he was a talented soccer player and was a shoemaker. He especially loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, his daughters Luisa Coutinho and her husband Gabe Coutinho Jr. of Fairhaven, Nancy Fernandes and her partner Edward Connelly of Marion; his grandchildren Ian, Drew, Paige Coutinho and Madison Connelly. He has several brothers and sisters in Portugal; several nieces and nephews. His funeral mass will be said 9am Monday at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception church. Visitation will be Sunday 5-8pm. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery.
