Antonio B. de Castro, 96, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Luke’s Hospital on Monday, March 31st, after a brief illness. Born in Ilhavo, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Nunes de Castro and the late Joana da Rocha, and the loving husband to Gabriela (Branco) de Castro.
As a lifelong seafarer, he immigrated to the United States in 1966 in search of the American dream settling in New Bedford with his young family where he worked mostly as a commercial fisherman aboard various vessels, including the Marilyn B. Antonio was a devoted family man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved cheering on his favorite soccer team, Sporting Clube de Portugal. Whether spending time in his backyard, which he referred to as “Mini Cancun” or fixing anything that needed repair, he was always busy doing what he loved. But most of all, Antonio cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. His warmth, wisdom, and playful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Antonio is survived by his wife Gabriela; his three children Tony Castro (Rose Palermo) of Rye, NY; Roy Castro (Pilar) of Swansea, MA; Mary Amezcua (Bertrand) of New Rochelle, NY; his six grandchildren Stephanie Charbonneau (Nick), Amanda Mitchell (Cory), Anthony Castro, Javier Amezcua, Isabel Castro, and Alejandro Amezcua; four step-grandchildren Bianca Jensen, Victoria Jensen, Sophia Jensen, and Olivia Jensen; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Charbonneau and Emmy Charbonneau, whom he adored.
A visitation will be held at the Boulevard Funeral Home at 223 Ashley Boulevard, New Bedford on Thursday, April 3rd from 5pm – 8pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 4th at 10am at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
