Antonio M. Pestana, 72, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, May 19th at St. Luke's Hospital after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Turquel, Alcobaca, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao Pestana and the late Gracinda Maria. He was the loving husband of Maria M. Pestana and will be deeply missed by her and his family.
Antonio was a machine operator at Aerovox and later retired from Acushnet Rubber. While in Portugal, he was a stone mason with his father, Joao. He proudly served three years in the Portuguese military and immigrated to the United States in 1975. At a very young age he was a courageous cancer fighter and survivor. Antonio sincerely loved his family and cherished spending time with all of them. He was an avid Benfica soccer fan and he loved playing cards and tending to his garden. Antonio was a very handy man and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
Antonio is survived by his wife Maria M. Pestana; his son, Kevin Pestana and his wife Sandie of Fairhaven; his daughter, Celia Pestana-Gomes and her husband Abel Gomes of New Bedford; his brother, Manuel Maria Pestana of Portugal and his sister, Maria Teresa Pestana of Portugal. He is also survived by his four lovely grandchildren, Lindsey Pestana, Gavin Gomes, Janessa Pestana and Gianna Gomes and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 23rd from 6-8pm at the Boulevard Funeral Home, 223 Ashley Blvd. His Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, May 24th at 11am. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
