Carol Burke

Carol Ann Burke of New Bedford passed away Thursday, August 30, at the age of 74. She endured several years of chronic illnesses, with much courage and determination. She was a kind and loving soul. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Alice and Joseph Fernandes, sister of Dorothy Fernandes, former wife of the late Maurice Burke Jr. She became a talented hairdresser and enjoyed her craft and friendly customers. She excelled in oil painting, arts and crafts and sewing. She loved shopping, dancing, dining, the movies, animals, nature and being with family and friends. But her greatest joy in life was her role and special blessing as mother to her beloved son, Sean Joseph Burke, who passed away at the early age of 31 years. She was also grateful for her lifelong, devoted, surviving friends, Janice Fauteux, Nancy Paiva, Nancy Cabral and the late Butch Cabral. Other survivors include her sister Dorothy Fernandes, cousins Paul Sylvia and his wife Eleanor, Daniel Mello and his wife Diana, Richard Sylvia of New Hampshire, Denis Fernandez of Middleboro and several other cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Mass with her cremated remains present at St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford on Saturday September 29 at 10:00am. Burial at Riverside Cemetery will be private. Donations in her memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
