Edmond Laliberte 79, of Acushnet, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and children at his side on Wednesday September 30, 2009, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was the husband of Hilda (Lage) Laliberte and son of the late Joseph Antoine Laliberte and Elizabeth Donna (Miller) Laliberte. He was born in New Bedford and was a long time standing resident of Acushnet and a communicate of St. Francis Xavier church. He taught drafting for several years at New Bedford Vocational High School. He also worked as a design engineer for Sippican, and later for Johnson and Johnson in which he implemented a number of projects in his career, including the NASA Lunar Excursion Model, pain shunts, brain apparatus, total knee replacements and packaging to name only a few. Edmond was a collector of wooden sailboats and books. His love was sailing in the Mattapoisett harbor with family and friends. He lived his life with a generous heart. Spending time with his grandchildren was a priority after his retirement. In his younger years, Edmond coached the Acushnet Police little league baseball team, assisted with Boy Scout troop 51 and was an active participant in the Greater New Bedford Astrology club. He also served on the Acushnet Board of Appeals and the American Catholic Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of 54 years; 2 sons Edmond Laliberte Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of New Bedford, Mark S. Laliberte and his life partner, Roy Snow of New Bedford; 2 daughters Michel Ferguson and her husband Dean of New Bedford, Donna Laliberte of Rochester; 5 grandchildren, Shawn, Jennifer, Michael, Christopher and Julia; siblings Arthur Laliberte, Paul Laliberte and Lina Bertrand. Visitation will be Thursday October 1, 2009 from 6-8pm. His funeral service and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Community Nurse and Hospice Care 62 Center St. Fairhaven, MA 02719. The Laliberte family would like to acknowledge the Community Nurse and Hospice care and Dr. William Hunt for their loyal dedication and service.
