Janice June Fauteux, 80 of New Bedford, passed away at The Oaks Nursing Facility on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Wilfred H. Fauteux and Gladys B. (Donth) Fauteux. She was born in Acushnet and resided in New Bedford all her life. She attended St. Kilian Grammar School from Kindergarten to 8th grade. She was a 1960 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy in Fairhaven. Janice was physically challenged her whole life, having been born with Cerebral Palsy, but that didn’t stop her from having a full, productive life. She graduated from Kinyon Campbell Business School and was hired at Hemingway Transport, Inc and stayed there from 1962-1982. She then worked at Universal Ind. 1982-1985, NB Public Library main branch 1986-1988, and the YWCA 1988-2010 and was honored to be selected to be in the 100 Years YWCA Book. She also worked part-time for Downtown New Bedford, Inc 1990-1998. She was a poll worker at St. Andrew’s Church for many years.
In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, bingo, word search, puzzles, scratch tickets, and going to the casino. She read The Standard Times faithfully, every day of her life since she learned to read as a child. She was also a fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. When living on her own became an obstacle, she became a resident of The Oaks and received excellent care there by the staff, especially Rachel and Matt. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in New Bedford.
She is survived by her loving, devoted sister, Nancy May Paiva of New Bedford. Other survivors include her niece, Christine Paiva Stewart and husband Rick of Fairhaven, nephew, Jason Paiva and wife Keiko of Japan, great nephew, Duncan Stewart of Fairhaven, many cousins, and special life long friends including Rita Forcier, Sandy Costa, Shirley Raphael, and the late Carol Burke. Her sister would like to thank all the staff at The Oaks for the excellent care and compassion they gave Janice all her years there.
Her Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Parish on Tuesday, March 15th at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to Mass from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Boulevard Funeral Home, 223 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to The Oaks Activity Department, 4525 Acushnet Ave, New Bedford, MA 02745.
