Joao Freitas

Joao Elias Freitas 88 of New Bedford passed away unexpectedly Tuesday June 9, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of the late Georgina (Gouveia) Freitas and son of the late Manuel and Joaquina Rosa (Gouveia) Freitas. He was born Madeira, and had lived in New Bedford since 1968. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Mr. Freitas was a very active member of the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento and the Clube Sport Madeirense. Survivors include his sisters Dolores Fernandes of New Bedford, Encarnacao Espirito Santo of Brazil; his nieces Odilia Teixeira, Luisa Coutinho, Nancy Fernandes, Maria Castro-Dennis, Rosa Medeiros and Lucinda Teixeira. Also several other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was brother of the late Lourdes Pereira. His funeral mass will be said Saturday 9am at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Visiting hours are Friday 5-8pm. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
