Joaquim R. “Jack” Marmelo 89 of New Bedford passed away Saturday May 23, 2015 at the Hathaway Manor. He was the husband of the late Velma (Silva) Marmelo and son of the late Joao R. and Maria Augusta (Paulino) Marmelo. He was born in Linhares, Portugal and had lived in New Bedford for 77 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Mr. Marmelo was formerly employed as a machine operator at Lambeth Rope. He was a member of the Centro Luzo Club and was considered a “jack of all trades”. Survivors include his companion and caretaker Isabel Alves and her son Nelson Alves; his nieces and nephews, Theresa Fernandes of Acushnet, Augusta Tavares of New Bedford, John Nobriga of Arizona and John Candido of New Bedford; also several great nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel Marmelo, Alice Marmelo and Conceicao “Connie” Nobriga. His funeral mass will be said 10:30am Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Visiting hours are Tuesday 5-8pm.Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.
