John Alves

John A. Alves 79, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 8, 2010 after a long illness. He was the husband of Eileen (Santos) Alves for 47 years and the late Mary (Bastarache) Alves. Born in New Bedford the son of the late John B. and Maria Barbara (Fernandes) Alves. He was a communicant of St. Joseph-St. Therese church. He was formerly employed as a driver for Old Colony Transportation, Island Transportation and LeBoeuf Livery Services. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Korea. He was a member of the 1955 Feast of the Blessed Sacrament committee. He enjoyed detailng cars in his garage and going to Twin Rivers. Survivors include his wife; his daughters Linda Mello and her husband Edward, Susan Arsenault and her husband Robert, Donna Hale and her husband Dennis; his son Michael Alves all of New Bedford; his sister Bernadette Costa; 8 grandchildren Melissa, Kelly, John, Robert Jr., Nicky, Kenny, Chris and Dee; 15 great grandchildren also many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Laura Jorge, Luiz Alves, Abel Alves and Barbara Pimentel. His funeral mass will be said 9:15am Thursday at St. Joseph-St. Therese church. Vistation will be Wednesday 5-8pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care  PO Box 751 Fairhaven, MA 02719-0831
