Jose B. Nobrega 79 of Fairhaven passed away unexpectedly on Sunday November 28, 2010 at R.I. Hospital. He was the husband of 56 years to Dolores (Marujo) Nobrega and son of the late Silvino B. and Maria R. (Baptista) Nobrega. He was born in Gaula on the Island of Madeira and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s church in Fairhaven. He was formerly employed as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. Mr. Nobrega served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service medal with 3 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service medal and the National Defense Service medal. He was a member of the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento and was a very active “festeiro”. He was also a member of Dia de Madeirense, a life member of the Fin, Fur and Feather and a life member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, cooking and traveling especially to Madeira. He loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife; his sons David Nobrega and his wife Louise of New Bedford, Jose Nobrega of Morehead, Kentucky; his daughter Rose Zolnierz and her husband David of East Freetown; his sister Maria de Sousa and her husband Aires of Acushnet; his grandchildren Eric Nobrega, Jennifer Nobrega, Tashena Nobrega, Joshua Nobrega, Zachary Zolnierz, Nicholas Zolnierz, Kimberly Zolnierz; a great grandchild Kaius Maradik; his sister-in laws Connie Marujo of New Bedford and Anne Nobrega of Maine; many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Luis Nobrega. His funeral mass will be said 10am Friday at St. Joseph’s church in Fairhaven. Visitation will be Thursday 5-8pm. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
