Laura Constant

Laura Caires (Camacho) Constant passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday April 27 2016, after a short illness. She was 87 years old. The devoted wife of the late Robert L. Constant, they were married 55 years. She was the daughter of the late Maria C. (Freitas Moinheiro) and Amadeu C. Camacho. Born and raised in New Bedford, where she lived most of her life, Laura was educated in New Bedford Public Schools. In 2005, she moved to Acushnet, where she lived in the country, in the home of her dreams. Laura was retired and was formerly employed by Grotogs, Knapp Shoe and Isotronics. Laura, a sweet and jovial person, was always willing to help anyone in need and always had a kind word for everyone. She was a strong advocate for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. A dedicated supporter of the Families Never Forget Team, she actively participated in all their fundraisers and activities. Laura was also a faithful supporter of the Market Ministries Soup Kitchen and made cakes and donated sweets to them each week. A communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, she prayed the rosary daily and had a special devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. She was also a faithful member of the Legion of Mary Auxiliaries. Laura was also an excellent cook and baker. She loved music and especially going to outdoor concerts and fairs. Proud of her Portuguese Madeiran heritage and culture, she looked forward to attending the parade and Feast of the Blessed Sacrament each year. Her family wishes to especially thank all the staff at Tobey Hospital for their considerate compassion, exceptional care and thoughtful attention. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa M. Constant of Acushnet, a son Robert J. Constant and wife Gail of Hyannis; one brother John Camacho and his wife Alice of Fairhaven, a sister-in-law Doris Camacho of Fairhaven; two special Godchildren, Maryann Ferro of New Bedford and Rosemary L. Ferro of Dartmouth; her faithful dog and companion Miley, also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was the sister of the late Alice C. Ferro, Albert C. Camacho and Amadeu Camacho Jr. Laura’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday May 2 at 10:30am at Immaculate Conception Church 136 Earle St. New Bedford. Visiting hours will be Sunday May 1 from 4 to 8pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Market Ministries Soup Kitchen 60 Eighth St. New Bedford, MA 02740 or to the American Cancer Society, Attn: RFL of Greater New Bedford, “Families Never Forget Team” 1324 Belmont St. Suite 204 Brockton, MA 02301 (Checks payable to American Cancer Society).
