Manuel J. Dias 89 of Acushnet, formerly of New Bedford, died Monday February 22, 2010, after a brief illness, at St. Luke's hospital. He was the husband of the late Marie Anne (Nadeau) Dias and son of the late Jose and Veriata (Mello) Dias and step-son of the late Manuel Gouveia. He was born in New Bedford and had lived in this area all of his life. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception church. He was formerly employed as a construction laborer for Olsen & Appleby and for Loranger Construction until his retirement. Mr. Dias was a member of the Mass. Laborers Union #385 for over 60 years. He was a member of the Panthers Athletic and Social club also the Panthers Golden Agers. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, he enjoyed collecting the "state" quarters and loved being with his family and friends. He was a WWII United States Army veteran. Survivors include his son Terrance Manuel Dias and his wife Joann of New Bedford; his daughters Claire Fournier and her husband Norman of New Bedford, Marilyn Skypeck and her husband Stanley of Acushnet, Loretta Warwick and her late husband William of Fairhaven; his sister Florence Lewis of Fairhaven; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. he was the brother of the late Leontine Sylvia and Miquelina Medeiros. His funeral mass will be said Friday 10:30am at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception church. Visitation will be Thursday 4-8pm. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery.
