Private funeral services were held for Mary (Mesquita) Araujo-Weigel 97 who passed away on Friday February 24, 2012 at the Royal Taber Nursing Facility. Born in New Bedford, Mrs. Weigel was the widow of Americo Araujo and Julien R. Weigel Sr. and was the oldest of the 12 children of Charles X. and Laura (Bettencourt) Mesquita. Mrs. Weigel was formerly employed at Kay Windsor and Paul Modes as a payroll clerk and previously worked at John I. Paulding and Fannie Farmer Candy in New Bedford. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth and was a member of the Dartmouth Seniors, Daughters of Isabella and St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Weigel enjoyed crocheting and knitting, donating many sweater sets for the newborns at St. Luke’s Hospital. She is survived by her daughters Madelyn C. Gregory of Dartmouth and Elaine R. Costa and her husband Dennis of New Bedford; six grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; her sisters Rose Seifert of Marion, Eleanor Mesquita and Theresa Mesquita both of Yarmouthport. She is predeceased by her sisters Cecelia Oliveira, Laura Wood and Louise Tetreault; and her brothers Charles X. Mesquita Jr., Nestor Mesquita, John Mesquita, Theodore Mason and Thomas Mesquita. Remembrances in Mrs. Weigel’s name can be made to the Prince Henry Society. A memorial mass will be said Saturday March 10 th at 11am at St. Mary’s church, South Dartmouth.
